Harwood tops Northfield, 7-2 (Jan. 28, 2023)

Waterbury, VT – Neutral zone was at the Ice Center in Waterbury, VT to watch the Harwood Union Highlanders faceoff against the Northfield Marauders for an early Saturday evening game. A crowd of about 200 people were entertained by a game that featured a little bit of everything from shorthanded goals to spectacular saves on breakaway chances. The Highlander’s scoring was led by a talented group of freshmen who scored six of their seven goals this evening.

Harwood jumped out to an early lead in the first minute of play when freshman forward Eli Herrington (#17) took a pass in the neutral zone from freshman d-man Alexander McCabe (#4) and came down the left wing and snapped a terrific wrist shot past Marauders goaltender Landon Amell (#35).  The Highlanders took 4 minor penalties in this period giving Northfield plenty of power play time including some brief 5 on 3 action.  However, some miscues by Northfield on power plays led to two shorthanded goals by Highlander freshman Milo Lavit (#25).  The period ended 3-0 in favor of Harwood despite being outshot 11 to 3.

In the second period, Harwood’s Eli Herrrington once again jumped on the Marauders in the first minute of play on a nice feed from winger Lavit.  Herrington, a tall rangy kid, was at times too much for the Northfield defense to handle. Half way through the second period, he netted his hat trick goal on a sniper shot in the top corner of the net. Senior Adin Combs (#2) got the assist on this goal. Shortly after, Travis Robillard (#1) came into the game to relieve goalie Amell.  Late in the period, the highlanders got another shorthanded goal from freshman Luke LaCroix (#10) with Combs getting his second helper of the evening.

Northfield got on the scoreboard in the third period when sophomore Nathaniel Elwell (#12) received a pass from freshman forward Eliot Caswell (#2) and beat Highlander goalie Owen Cheney (#30).  Harwood’s Combs would then get an unassisted goal a few minutes later. Northfield ended the scoring this evening on a goal by Caswell on a feed from senior defenseman Graysen Hudson (#6).  The period saw lots of scoring opportunities and great saves by both goaltenders, especially Northfield’s Robillard who made some exceptional saves that awed the crowd.
