Edward G. Watkins Girls' Invitational Hockey Tournament Day 1 Recap

Cushing vs. Winchendon – At the puck drop Cushing controlled most of the first period. Opening up the scoring at 10:43 was Cushing’s #8 Samantha Taber off of a rebound. Winchendon came back with a goal from the slot at 8:26 from #6 Julia Holmes. Less than a minute later Winchendon’s #12 Alexandra Johnson capitalized on nice redirect goal that went 5 hole.

The second period was more back and forth play. Winchendon got a power play goal at 14:24 from #8 Zoe Tow. Cushing answered back at 9:46 from another goal from #8 Taber, this time off of a breakaway. Winchendon responded with a 2v1 goal from #13 Grace Fitzgerald, where she opened up her hips to fake a pass and put it short side. Cushing’s #15 Shea Verrier would carry the puck from behind the net and put it past the goaltender only 43 seconds later. 

The third period would remain scoreless, giving Winchendon the 4-3 win.

Northwood vs. Berkshire – We would be scoreless until the last minute of play in the first. Berkshire’s #24 Liz Della Penna would get a breakaway chance off of a fumble from a Northwood defender and sink it. Helping Berkshire with the lead would be #33 Annie Hauser with an impressive glove save on a PK earlier in the period.

There was a lot of back and forth play during the second. There would be no scoring due to great goaltending from both sides. For Northwood #34 Emilie Venne and Berkshire #33 Hauser.

Northwood would control most of the third and final be able to capitalize with 3:53 left in the period with a top shelf goal from #5 Marina Alvarez. Berkshire would score the winning goal with on 25 seconds left to play in the game.

Worcester vs. Deerfield – Deerfield opened up the scoring with a goal from a scrum in front of the net. Capitalizing on the play was #22 Kaiden Coelho, giving Deerfield the lead going into the second.

Another single goal period would follow, this time Worcester putting the puck in the back of the net. #5 Kaleigh Wall would snipe in the slot to tie up the game at 9:55. Worcester’s goalie made a great desperation kick save to keep the game tied at the end of the period.

Worcester would score the lone goal in the third to give them the win. A nice tap in goal from #10 Megan Buxton with an assist from #2 Ciara Wall.

Culver vs. New Hampton – New Hampton got two quick goals in the first 2 minutes of the game. The first coming from #2 Julia Pellerin and the second from #9 Taze Thompson. Culver would be able to hold them off for almost the rest of the period. #21 Maddie Young would score with less than a minute left giving New Hampton a 3-0 lead going into the second.

New Hampton would continue their lead into the second. With #15 Casey Chesner putting the puck top shelf at 13:35. They continued with a point from #18 Ava Gosnell. Culver was  able to respond with 2:53 left in the period with #18 Margaret Benecke notching a point. New Hampton would answer quickly with quick shot from #2 Pellerin to finish out the second period.

Culver would get the first goal of the final period, once again #18 Benecke would sink a loose rebound.
Culver would try and mount a come back a goal from #19 Abigail Marohn at 5:27 left in the game. New Hampton would response at 4:37 with another point from Thompson. New Hampton would take the win 7-3.
