Rivers School s. Dexter
Dexter looks to continue their great season, after suffering their first loss of the year to Lawrence academy in the final of the EG Watkins Tournament at Cushing Academy.
Rivers came out flying early on and opened up the scoring with a quick goal 10 seconds into the game by 2003 Reid Copella. Copella picked up the puck off a turnover, walked in and let a shot go from the dot that went upstairs to make it 1-0 Rivers early on. But that didn’t last long, as Dexter quickly went on the powerplay, and made Rivers pay on a beautiful tic tac toe goal banged home by 2002 BU commit Doug Grimes assisted by 2001 Harvard commit John Fusco.
As the period moved along, both teams got into penalty trouble, and again Rivers found themselves killing off a deadly Dexter powerplay, quarterbacked by John Fusco and 2001 UMass commit Michael Adamson. This time, 2000 Colby commit John McElaney tapped home a backdoor feed from Colgate commit and 2001 Ben Raymond. Period one ended at a 2-1 Dexter lead.
The second period got off to a slow start for both teams. Not a lot of offensive chance and physical play was still at a premium. About halfway through the second period, Dexter got it going again with a goal from 2003 Matt Fusco off a beautiful pass from 2003 Matt Copponi. Shortly after that goal Dexter controlled the play for the rest of the period dominating the shot totals, and hits. With about 5 minutes remaining Dexter kept it rolling with a gorgeous goal from Doug Grimes cutting to the middle and backhanding a shot upstairs, assisted by 2001 Jack Dempsey. Shortly after the midway point of the second period Dexter found the net once again as John Fusco got a seeing eye shot through the screen, that squeaked through the goalies arm to make it 5-1.
The closing frame saw a bit of a push from Rivers but to no avail. 2001 Sam Amato had a lot of great chances but couldn’t tuck one home. He had a really strong game for Rivers tonight. Rivers was able to draw a few penalties from Dexter, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Five minutes after that, Dexter added to that total with a tap in goal from 2003 Culin Wilson.
That would conclude the game with a final score of 6-1. Dexter able to bounce back from a loss with a really strong performance from their top guns.
1. John Fusco (Dexter)
2. Doug Grimes (Dexter)
3. Jack Dempsey (Dexter)
NZ Notes: For Dexter; Some honorable mentions and notes of guys we also liked. Vincent Gould had a really strong game for Dexter playing the wing on the third line, His compete level is high coupled with a big frame and a great shot. For Rivers; beyond Amato who had great energy all night; we also liked Yale commit Phillip Tresca‘s game. Really high hockey IQ, and used in all situations for Rivers.
