FREE: Manitoba Junior Hockey League Cancels Remaining Season

The MJHL Board of Governors voted last week to cancel the remainder of the regular season and playoffs, meaning that the league, for the second year in a row, won’t crown a Turnbull Cup champion.

The cancelation came after COVID protocols in the province prevented on-ice activities.

“It came down to really running out of time with no light at the end of the tunnel,” MJHL commissioner Kevin Saurette told Global News. “The restrictions that are currently in place – restricting indoor team activities, was really the final dagger in our quest to return to play and resume our season.

“There’s definitely a sentiment of disappointment and sadness that the season has come to an end this way.”

The season began as normal in September for the MJHL, but the season was put on pause on Nov. 12 when the province moved into “red” status. Teams played between 5-10 games before the pause.
