Beanpot Likely Canceled

Hockey East commissioner Steve Metcalf held a media conference call on Thursday where he said he thought it was “unlikely” that a Beanpot will take place this season. Later in the day, it was learned that Harvard would not be playing hockey this winter, as all of the Ivy League schools are shuttered for the winter, effectively putting the final nail in the coffin for the Beantpot in 2021.

The Beanpot isn’t run by Hockey East (it’s coordinated by the four participating schools), but three of those schools are in Hockey East and Metcalf, who has been on the job since the spring, said that there has been no conversation regarding a Beanpot and it was not worked into the league’s schedule.

“I think it’s very unlikely,” he said. “It’s not built into anyone’s schedule. I am not anticipating that it will be played this year. The schools in our league that usually participate have a full slate of games the weekend before and the weekend after.”

The tournament has been played every year since 1952.
