The Saint John Sea Dogs announced that they have signed top prospect Peter Reynolds. The 2003-born forward was ranked third overall in the 2019 QMJHL Draft and was previously committed to Boston College.
“I really want to thank Boston College and Chilliwack for everything they have done for me” said Reynolds. “Coach Maloney taught me so much this past year and I really appreciate it. I want to thank Coach York and Coach Buckley for everything they have done for me as well.”
Reynolds played the 2019-2020 season for Chilliwack in the BCHL where he led all 16-year-olds in scoring with 14 goals and 33 assists in 53 games. Reynolds’ point total ranks third in the last ten years for 16-year-olds, behind Tyson Jost (10th Overall in 2016 NHL Draft – Colorado Avalanche) and Alex Newhook (16th Overall in 2019 NHL Draft – Colorado Avalanche), and 16th all time in the BCHL.
“He’s a rare combination of size, IQ and skating and skill,” said NZ scouts. “He’s a smooth, polished skater who can protect the puck in tight and along the boards but can also breakdown defenders 1v1 and maneuvers his way through traffic areas. He plays a possession style game, he’s poised with the puck and his head is always up surveying the ice to find passing lanes. He scored a great catch and shoot snapshot goal from the faceoff dot showing his powerful shot. He does a nice job disguising his release and tricks goalies often.
“What separates Reynolds from other top prospects in the age group is his ability to slow the game down and control the pace and the puck. He has the skating and speed to play up-tempo but like elite players he can find open ice and has all the tools to make the necessary play. His hockey sense, ability to read the play and create for himself and for his teammates makes him a dangerous playmaker every time he’s on the ice.
Reynolds was selected by the Sea Dogs with the No. 21 overall in the 2019 QMJHL Draft. Prior to last season, Reynolds played three seasons at Shattuck St. Mary’s in Minnesota registering a total of 236 points.
“I am really excited to come home and be close to my family,” Reynolds said. “I am also extremely excited to play for such a world class organization in my backyard.
“Growing up I watched plenty of Sea Dogs games and I thought they were the coolest thing. I loved watching Huberdeau, he was so dominant and now to finally be with the Sea Dogs is very exciting.”
