OHL: Peterborough Signs Two, Mississauga Signs Beck

The Peterborough Petes announced Friday that the team has received commitments from 2020 OHL Priority Selection second-round picks Sam Alfano and Justin DeZoete.

“It takes a physically strong and skilled opponent to separate Alfano from the puck as, in addition to his large frame, he has the hockey IQ to protect the puck and get to open ice to make his next play,” said NZ scouts. “He possesses multiple shot types that encompass accuracy, power, and are regularly on target.”

On DeZoete, NZ scouts said, “Every time you watch Dezeote you appreciate his game more. Whether is backing defenders in with his speed to create room for others or his smarts to take the puck back late in a close game with a lead to use up valuable time, he understands the game and makes others around him better. Dezeote’s combination of speed and skill on the offensive side is equalled by his work ethic and body positioning on the defensive side.”

Alfano, a 2004-born right-winger, was selected by the Petes in the 2nd round, 23rd overall in this year’s OHL Priority Selection. As captain of the Southern Tier Minor Midget AAA Admirals, he registered 36 goals, 27 assists, and 63 points in 32 games. The 6’3”, 180lbs Cayuga native was named OMHA SCTA Player of the Year after leading the league in goals.

“Committing to the OHL is a dream come true for me and I am honored to have the opportunity to play for such a historic and prestigious franchise like the Petes,” said Alfano. “I just can’t wait to get started with my new teammates and play in front of the great hockey fans of Peterborough.”

DeZoete, a 2004-born right winger, was also selected by the Petes in the 2nd round, 35th overall in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. In 33 games this season, he recorded 25 goals and 30 assists for 55 points. The 5’11”, 159lbs Hamilton native served as co-captain of the Huskies.

“This is a dream come true,” added DeZoete. “Words can’t describe how excited I am, I can’t wait to get going.”

Mississauga signed Owen Beck, who was the 29th overall selection in this year’s OHL Priority Selection.

“We are pleased to announce the signing of Owen Beck,” says  Richmond. “Owen plays the game hard every shift. His hockey IQ and compete level will be a big addition to our hockey club. We would like to welcome Owen and his Family to the Steelheads.”

Beck becomes the second member of the club’s 2020 Draft Class to sign with the Steelheads following the signing of first round pick, Zak Lavoie last week. In 34 games with the OMHA’s Quinte Red Devils last season, the sturdy centreman tallied 19 goals and 20 assists for a total of 39 points. Beck would add 8 points including 4 goals and 4 assists in 7 playoff games with the Red Devils. At 5’11, 180 lbs, Beck is regarded as a strong, right shot centreman that plays a smart 200’ game.

“Beck is an offensive power-forward type player that uses his quick and deceptive hands to make plays and/or finish from anywhere close if given the chance,” said NZ scouts. “This past weekend, his high compete level and nose for the net were regularly on display as he tied for second in OMHA Championship Tournament scoring with ten points in just five games, including a beautiful penalty shot backhand deke in the gold medal game.”
