WHL: Edmonton Oil Kings Sign Forward Shea Van Olm

The Edmonton Oil Kings have signed forward Shea Van Olm to a Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreement, the Club announced on Thursday.

The 16-year-old from Calgary dressed in 35 games as a member of the Calgary NWCAA Stampeders Minor Midget AAA (AMMHL) in the 2019-20 season, leading his team in scoring with 35 goals and 25 assists for 60 points along with 147 penalty minutes.

“Van Olm is skilled player who can create and make plays in the offensive end with his vision and hands to create space,” said NZ scouts. “A dangerous presence in the offensive end, Van olm battles hard for his chances by out working the other team. He’s often first on pucks and makes effective passes to teammates while he keeps his feet moving to try and escape a defender, he likes to take the puck up high and play a give and go game where he will throw it back then try and attack the net and look for a chance close to the net.”

Tipping the scales at 5-foot-9 and 150 pounds when he was selected in the sixth round, No. 128 overall by the Oil Kings in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, the 16-year-old Van Olm has since sprouted to 6-foot-1 and 171 pounds.

In 2018-19, he participated in the Alberta Cup and tallied six points (1G, 5A) in five games as a member of Team Alberta Green who claimed third place in the tournament.

“Shea had an impactful season in the AMMHL last year and earned the offer of a Standard Player Agreement,” said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Kirt Hill.

“Shea is a good skating, physical player who has the ability to finish plays around the net. He plays a hard-nosed style of game which makes him an effective player each and every shift.”
