USA Hockey Announces National Under-17 Team

USA Hockey announced the 23 players selected to the National Under-17 team on Wednesday. The roster includes 13 forwards, eight defensemen and two goalies all of whom were born in 2004.

“We’re thrilled about the bright, young talent that will make up our U17 roster next season,” said Kevin Reiter, director of player personnel for the NTDP. “While we weren’t able to hold our typical evaluation camp because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s just one component of our overall process. We’re fortunate to have a terrific network of scouts, along with our own staff, in place to help in selecting the team. In the end, it’s never easy to get to the final roster as there are so many talented players in our country.”

The U-17 team plays in the USHL as well against select teams from the NAHL and the Minnesota Elite League. The team will also participate in international tournaments.

There are 17 states represented on the team, with Minnesota leading the way with five selections. The NTDP is a two-year residency program for high-performance players that is located at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.

Seth Appert is the head coach of the team and he’ll be assisted by Nick Fohr and Brent Darnell. The first international competition for the team will be the 2020 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in November; the tournament is scheduled to be held in Price Edward Island.

In total, 14 of Neutral Zone’s top-20 players were selected for the team. Neutral Zone has Gavin Bridley ranked as the No. 8 2004-born player in the U.S. but he was not selected. Other top-20 players we had who didn’t make the team were Gavin Hayes, Nick Pierre, Maxim Namestnikov, Spencer Sova and Zach Filak.
