NCAA: Merrimack Lands St. Andrew’s D Liam Cavan

The Merrimack men’s hockey team received a commitment last Thursday from 2002-born defenseman Liam Cavan (3.5⭐), an Ontario native who played the last two seasons with St. Andrew’s College in Ontario. SAC is also where Merrimack recruits Mark Hillier (3.75⭐) and Devlin O’Brien (3.75⭐) played this past season. Cavan is projected as a 2021 recruit for the Warriors.

Cavan is an offensive and physical defenseman, despite his smaller size (5-foot-11, 160 pounds). This season he finished with nine goals and 24 assists in 48 games but 15 of his 33 points game on the power play (5 goals, 10 assists).

Last season Cavan had 39 points (9 goals, 30 assists) in 57 games with St. Andrew’s.

Cavan was given an A- grade for a superb showing when we saw him at the St. Sebastian’s tournament this past January.

“The Gloucester Ontario native plays a hard-nosed, simple game but is very effective as he seals guys off, jump starts the breakout and can provide an offensive touch from the blue line,” scouts said after the tournament. “He is very smooth and mobile along the line as he is poised with the puck and keeps his head up to look for tips or re-directs out front. Would drop down the back side as well at the right times. He doesn’t force offensive steps and he takes care of the puck, never throws it away. Cavan was very physical and delivered several hard hits in open ice. Also got a couple of questionable roughing penalties out front for being too physical with players. Had a goal and couple assists this weekend.”
