Freddy Meyer is the new head coach at The Rivers School in Weston, Mass., replacing Shawn McEachern who announced last month that he was leaving the program to become the U16 coach at the new Boston Imperials Academy at Matignon.
Meyer confirmed the news to Neutral Zone on Monday night.
Meyer, 39, is a former BU Terrier just like his predecessor. After graduating as team captain in 2003, Meyer went on to play 281 games in the NHL over a nine-year pro career.
After retiring from playing, Meyer spent two seasons on staff with the Manchester Monarchs (2012-14) as an assistant coach while the Monarchs were the AHL-affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings.
In 2014 Meyer became the head coach of the East Coast Wizards EHL team and in 2017 he added GM responsibilities.
Meyer led the Wizards to a 23-17-6 record this season. Last season the Wizards won the EHL’s South Division with a 29-12-3 record.
The Rivers job was highly sought after and Meyer beat out an impressive list of candidates that included Divison I assistants in Hockey East and the ECAC.
Rivers finished this season 15-10-1.
