Denver made a splash in recruiting this week, landing a 2020 commitment from 4.25-star forward Wyatt Schingoethe. The Illinois native will spend this season with the Waterloo Blackhawks in the USHL, where he’s coming off a 33-point USHL rookie campaign last season (11 goals, 22 assists in 62 games). The Black Hawks selected Schingoethe in the 2018 Phase I Draft, and we had Schingoethe pegged as Waterloo’s best prospect coming out of the draft.
“Schingoethe is a polished, productive player who thinks the game at a high level and has the tools to play a number of ways,” scouts noted.
Schingoethe’s commitment is the second 2020 commitment this week for Denver, which also landed Owen Ozar out of the BCHL.
Porter Schachle, a 3.5-star forward from Wasilla, Alaska, is headed to Alaska-Anchorage in 2020 where he’ll join his brother, Trent, who is a sophomore this season. This season Schachle will be a second-year player with the Kenai River Brown Bears in the NAHL, where he scored three goals and added seven assists last season in 23 games. Prior to the NAHL, Schachle played high school and midget hockey in his home state for the Alaska Oilers and Wasilla High.
Michigan Tech received a 2020 commitment from 3.5-star defenseman Ollie Bezick. A Florida native, Bezick will play for the Amarillo Bulls (NAHL) this upcoming season. Last season he appeared in two games for the Bulls following 20 games with Honeybaked U18 team, where he scored 17 points (7g-10a) from the blue line. Bezick also played one season with Little Caesars U18 team in 2017-18.
The new coaching staff at St. Lawrence stayed busy, landing 3.5-star forward Justin Paul for 2021. The 5-foot-11 forward was named an assistant captain for the Georgetown Raiders (OJHL) this season. Last season Paul finished with 20 goals and 29 assists in 55 games for the Raiders; he was named OJHL Second Team All-Prospect in 2016-17 and has been a regular in the OJHL since his 16-year-old year, totaling 125 points (50g-75a) in 162 career games in the league.
Paul was assessed a B grade when our scouts watched him in March.
“Justin is a strong skater with long and powerful strides and a quick first few steps,” our scouts said. “His explosiveness allows him to challenge the opposing defenders 1-on-1 by changing speeds with the puck. He is able to locate the open man on the ice and executes on his passes showing a fairly high level of awareness. Throughout the game, he was able to set up his linemates with his passing in shooting positions, and despite registering only the one assist in the game he was involved in plenty of offensive chances”
