SEAC Tigers @ Calgary Flames and Calgary Royals

Game: SEAC Tigers @ Calgary Flames; Calgary Royals
Where: Max Bell Centre; Stu Peppard Arena in Calgary, AB
When: December 2 and 3, 2017
League: AMBHL

Description: This is a full team report of the SEAC Tigers. They spent the weekend in Calgary and played one of the league’s top teams in the Royals and one of the lower-ranked teams in the Flames. The Tigers walked away without any points in back-to-back losses. On Saturday night they lost a chippy affair against the Flames 4-2. This game featured a lot of hits and some fisticuffs towards the end. On Sunday afternoon, the Tigers fell to the Royals 4-1. Despite being able to match the Royals’ intensity and physicality, the Tigers’ lack of scoring depth left them unable to consistently break through the Royals’ defense.

SEAC TIGERS:

Ty Moore #15 (LW, L, 5’11”, 148lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Ty plays the power forward role well. His size allows him to protect the puck well. He also dominates in the corners and loves getting involved physically. His initial first strides are quick and efficient, and his overall stride is smooth and generates good speed. He has quick hands and will take on defenders one-on-one with confidence. He has an accurate shot with a good release, but it lacks zip. He ha an OK hockey sense, but he has a tendency to skate with his head down. On defense he flamingos in shot-blocking situations. Grade: B+

Caleb Wyrostok #11 (C, R, 5’8”, 138lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- One of the few offensive threats on his team, Caleb is a fleet-footed skater with a tremendous release on his wrist shot. His slick edge work and soft hands make him a natural playmaker. He generates time and space and skates with his head up. He has good vision and can send numerous types of passes (saucers, backhands, soft, hard) with accuracy. On defense he needs to be more consistent in in effort. He has the natural tools to be a great defender, he just needs to bring the work ethic to both ends of the ice. Grade: B

Roman Cherniak #20 (RW, R, 5’5”, 114lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2004)- As an ‘04, Roman’s biggest need is to grow into his body, because in a physical game he can be neutralized. But he looks great with the puck. He has a nice technical stride and generates lots of power and speed through his lower half. He also is a pass-first player who can pick a team apart with time and space. Grade: B

Tyler Miller #5 (D, L, 5’3”, 99lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2004)- Tyler is another ‘04 player who needs to add more size. Tyler is already showing that he can capitalize in different areas of the game to keep himself relevant. His quick feet, low centre of gravity and good stride allow him to escape pressure and keep the threats in front of him. He is an intelligent defender with great gap control and a good stick. Offensively he looks to get puck deeps and he gets pucks up to his forwards efficiently in transition. Grade: B

Cayden Dumanowski #16 (LW, L, 5’9”, 125lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Cayden plays a solid 200-foot game. His willingness to collapse and fill in for his defensemen is commendable. He shows great situational awareness and a strong work ethic. He’s able to collapse into the slot and still cover his point man because of his excellent edge work and efficient first strides that generate good speed. On offense he shows patience and an ability to make plays in traffic. He can improve on his finishing instinct or elusiveness in the attacking zone. He plays a straight-forward, hard-working game. Grade: B+

Mason Mowat #7 (C, R, 5’11”, 149lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Mason is a well-rounded, two-way player, who works incredibly hard and seems to be the tone setter for his team. A good skater, he generates power out of his edges and turns and never seems to be out of position. His starts and stops are controlled and keep him in great position. He goes to the net hard, is hard on pucks and hits hard. He has a quick release and is a strong passer, but he lacks that true goal-scoring touch at this moment. He is an effort-based player instead of a finesse-based one. Grade: B+

Ethan Machan #21 (RW, R, 5’11”, 152lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Ethan is a big-bodied forward who loves to engage physically. His skating is good, neither elite nor problematic. He can play with pace and will often try to take on defenders one-on-one. He looks dangerous at first, but too often he tries the same move, allowing defenders to quickly recognize and neutralize. He needs work on keeping his head up in open space with the puck. He also needs to puck watch less on defense when he is responsible for the weak side. Grade: B

Quintin Unreiner #4 (D, R, 5’9”, 124lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Quintin is a long, lean defender who takes up a vast majority of space with his length and stick. Once he starts to get momentum his stride looks good, but he is very heavy footed and at times. Despite still growing into his frame and lacking that strength, Quintin is a competitor who works hard on defense. He also shows poise on the offensive blueline and looks to make plays on the power play. Grade: B-

Gerret Harty #12 (D, R, 6’0”, 150lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- He uses his length and stick effectively in the defensive zone and uses his leverage against smaller players really well. He can improve on his skating, as opponents can take advantage of his lack of foot speed and in tight situations. When the puck is on his stick, he skates with his head up and looks like a good puck mover, but his passing needs to be more consistent under pressure. Grade: B-

Callen Prosofsky #14 (LW, R, 5’5”, 110lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Callen is a strong skater who generates a lot of speed and power. His edge work is strong and he will push the pace as much as he can. His forechecking is relentless and features effort, anticipation and reaction time. On offense he tries to be a facilitator, but he needs to work on his decision making with the puck. Grade: B

Jase Fleury #19 (C, L, 5’7”, 141lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- He has a strong work ethic on the ice and every shift. He could improve on his vision and shot, but he does all the little things right. Grade: B

Dayden Collier #2 (RW, R, 5’7”, 124lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2004)- He is physically ahead of the other ‘04s on the team, and he takes advantage of his natural ability. He plays a strong physical game. His skating needs some work as his stride is stiff and he can look uncomfortable in an east-west game. Given time and space, Dayden shows that he has a good brain and can make smart plays, knowing when to play it safe and when to attack. Grade: C+

Cole Rath #18 (D, R, 5’9”, 139lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Once he gets momentum going, this puck-moving defenseman can generate good speed and look elusive with the puck in transition. He moves pucks intelligently and pushes play forward at pace. Against attackers, Cole needs to work on his gap control and transition from forward to backward skating. Grade: B-

Carsyn Good #3 (D, L, 5’8”, 120lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Carsyn has good breakaway speed, a great first step and us a nice puck facilitator for his forwards. His hockey sense may be his strongest asset as he is never out of position and is always looking. He could improve on his physicality as he is often out-muscled in front of the net and along the boards. Grade: B

Tanner Gold #10 (D, L, 5’8”, 128lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- Tanner plays a strong positional game and will engage physically, taking advantage of his good size. He is an average skater with good edges and an ability to escape pressure with his feet. But he needs to work on his poise with the puck at either end of the ice. He can put pucks in dangerous areas. Grade: B-

Brendan Olson #31 (G, L, 5’11”, 142lbs, Medicine Hat, AB, 2003)- He is big and makes himself look big in the net. He plays positionally sound and moves efficiently in the net. He covers the lower half well and he tracks pucks well. He needs to work on keeping his rebound control consistent. He can also improve his glove hand, as he holds his glove in tight covering the upper outside corner of his left pad. Grade: B
