Ian Moran, the 15 year NHLer, has signed on with Neutral Zone as their Head Scout in New England, filling the role of Brian Murphy who was promoted to Director of U.S. scouting earlier in the month.
Moran grew up in Cleveland, Ohio but moved to the Boston region where he attended Belmont Hill. After a four-year standout prep career, he accepted a scholarship to Boston College where he was the Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 1991. He went on to have a 15-year pro career playing over 500 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins and Anaheim Ducks.
Ian will be scouting predominately New England Prep, Massachusetts High School and U16/U18 Midget hockey around New England.
“I am excited to join the Neutral Zone team. I have always found their player evaluations to be honest and credible and I know their scouts are professional.” remarked Moran. “All players these days can skate, dangle and shoot when there is no resistance. I like the players who can think the game and learn from their mistakes.”
Moran will start right away at the Junior Chowder Cup this weekend alongside Brian Murphy and Ed Bessinger.
“Ian is a skills coach for many of the top prospects in the Boston area and has a unique scouting perspective with his experience as a prep, college and pro player. His knowledge of the game is unmatched and his ability to articulate players’ strengths and weaknesses is excellent” said Brian Murphy who was his teammate at Belmont Hill in the early 90’s.
Neutral Zone likes to hire scouts who have played or coached in the regions they are scouting and Moran was an obvious choice.
“I was in the same shoes as the players I am scouting. I had the same goals and dreams and can relate to what they are going through. I can’t wait to get started.”
