Malden, MA – Today’s game brought Neutral Zone to Malden Valley Forum for a Catholic Conference showdown between longtime rivals: the BC High Eagles and Malden Catholic Lancers. We wanted to get an look at this Sunday matinee early in the season and this game did not disappoint.
From the drop of the puck, the Eagles jumped all over the Lancers and got on the board just 2:38 into the game with a shot from high in the zone, as sophomore forward Michael McClory found the back of the net with assists from sophomore defender Brendan McCarthy and junior forward David Williams. Less than 30 seconds later, the Eagles doubled their lead with a hard forecheck, causing a turnover in the slot where Jackie Murphy scooped up the loose puck and walked in alone, beating the Lancer goalie. BC High made it 3-0 just before the seven minute mark of the period when freshman Michael Federico made a sweet pass across the crease on his backhand to junior forward Owen Welch, forcing MC to call a timeout and stop the bleeding. BC High would make it 4-0 on the powerplay at the 16 minute mark of the first period when sophomore defender Pete Luecke lit the lamp with assists by senior D Matt Cox and sophomore forward Joe Feinberg. BC outshot MC 14-5 in the first period and had four different goal scorers sending the teams to the locker rooms, with the Eagles leading 4-0.
The second period was more of the same, with the Eagles forechecking hard and controlling the play in the offensive zone. BC was led on the forecheck by Murphy, who was throwing his body around, hitting everything in a white jersey and causing chaos in the offensive zone. Just 4:04 into the period, senior defenseman John Degnan made it 5-0 BC on a low hard shot that found it’s way through. The Lancers showed some life getting the offense going on a series of shots and causing their own havoc in front of the Eagles net before senior forward Michael Bourgeois got the blue and gold on the board with assists from junior defender Erik Utter and freshman forward Michael Doe. The Eagles stretched their lead back to five goals a little over a minute later when sophomore forward Chris Brennick scored off an offensive zone faceoff from Williams and McClory. The middle frame ended with the Eagles outshooting the Lancers 12-8 and leading 6-1 on the scoreboard, a two-period total in shots 27-13 in favor of the Eagles.
The third period started out with some physical play by both teams. BC High capitalized on a 5-on-3 situation with a blast from the point by Cox with assists from Welch and Feinberg, making it 7-1. The Eagles would add two more goals to close out the scoring and get the two conference points on the road. Freshman D Tripp Schuwerk scored the 8th goal, and Murphy scored the ninth and final goal to close out the game. 9-1 was the final.
