Woburn, MA – The Reading Rockets visited the Woburn Tanners in a battle of Middlesex League Liberty Division rivals. Both teams were 3-1 in the League prior to tonight’s game. The first period was all Reading: they controlled the play for most of the period. The Rockets did a great job of getting pucks behind the Woburn defensemen and creating some quality scoring chances. Both teams had a power play, but came up with nothing to show for it. Reading outshot Woburn by a large margin in the first, with no goals being scored on either side. Woburn goalie Jeremy Barreto was the main reason for that, turning away more than a dozen shots to close out the period.
Woburn seemed to find their legs in-between periods and came out flying in the second, drawing an early penalty and going on the power play. They didn’t score but had a couple of nice scoring chances. Both teams went back and forth up and down the sheet in the middle of the period, but Reading ultimately picked up where they left off in the first and carried the rest of the period, which ended 0-0.
The third was quite a bit like the first, with Reading controlling possession, generating scoring chances and playing a complete team game. Woburn didn’t have many scoring chances but battled hard in the defensive zone to make things tough on Reading. Once again, Woburn goalie Barreto was solid in the net throughout the third, turning away all of the Rockets’ shots and giving his team a chance to get to overtime.
Once we got to overtime, Reading once again controlled the momentum. Woburn didn’t record a shot in overtime, and relied on Barreto to close the door: which he did a handful of times. He was great all night and did his part to earn a 0-0 tie and grab one point for Woburn to stay even with Reading in the league standings.
