Duxbury Knocks Off Barnstable 5-1

Kingston, MA – The NZ staff spent New Years Day, where else, in a hockey rink! Today we were at The Bog in Kingston, MA to watch the Barnstable Red Raiders take on the Duxbury Dragons in a South Shore battle.

The game started with an early blitz from Barnstable and they were the first to crack the scoreboard: 8th grade forward Chase Field put the visitors up 1-0. Towards the end of the period, Duxbury would even it up as forward Dan Bird potted one to make it 1-1 as we reached the end of the first.

In the second period, the Dragons began to set a more physical tone and it changed the trajectory of this game. Junior forward Connor O’Connell was delivering massive hits and his teammates really fed off that momentum and the Dragons began to take control. Junior forward Aiden Harrington kicked things off with an early score, followed by another just over 10 minutes later, both of them were hard wristers. With a couple of minutes remaining, the Dragons had a two goal lead but sophomore Cormac Weiler was able to tack one on just before the buzzer at the end of the second: both teams went to the room and the score was 4-1.

As we moved into the third period, Duxbury was forced to shorten the bench due to multiple injuries and as a result, role players began to play up higher in the line chart and they filled in very well, keeping the pressure on the Red Raiders for the remainder of this game. One player, in particular, junior forward Reilly Murray was out there nearly every other shift, attempting to fill in shifts for players out with injury. In terms of the scoreboard, there was one more addition before the game wrapped up: Dan Bird tallied his second of the game with just under five minutes left. A strong, complete-game effort for the Dragons.
