Shrewsbury defeats Wachusett 3-2

Alicandro’s Two Goals Pace Shrewsbury Over Wachusett

Westboro, MA: Junior Jamison Alicandro struck twice, including the game-winner during a power-play early in the third, to lead Shrewsbury to a 3-2 victory over Wachusett.  The Colonials were the beneficiary of a five-minute major assessed to Wachusett’s Ryan Gardula to end the second frame, then cashed in just 37 seconds into the third.

Alicandro worked the umbrella with senior captain Timothy Fitzpatrick and junior Matthew Nuzzolilo before walking into the slot and beating Wachusett netminder Donovan Alfama glove side for the go-ahead tally.  Alfama, our third star of the game, kept the Mountaineers within striking distance, especially from the second period on as Shrewsbury had several opportunities on the man-advantage.

The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to senior Kevin Skagerlind who converted a Gardula feed for his first of two on the night.  Senior captain Sean Gardner, who was a force on the back end all night, started the rush from his own end with great pace through the neutral zone for an easy entry.  Gardner was physical on and off the puck while dominating below the goal line to lead the Green and White defense.

The Colonials got the equalizer six minutes later after a Wachusett turnover when junior Will Ambach received a pass from senior Drew Albertson to spring him on a partial breakaway and beat Alfama stick side to make it 1-1.  Two minutes later, Alicandro got his first of the game as he converted a seam pass from senior Joseph Filonis to send the Colonials to the locker room up 2-1 after the first period.

The game remained 2-1 for most of the second until Skagerlind broke free behind the Shrewsbury defense and beat junior Ryan Sande’s glove to pull even going into the second intermission.  The late Gardula major put Wachusett behind the eight-ball going into the final stanza and led to the game-winner by Alicandro.  Final: Shrewsbury 3 Wachusett 1
