St. John’s Shrewsbury at Austin Prep

Saint Johns Shrewsbury at Austin Prep; 1/21/2019

Stoneham, MA– On Monday night the Saint John’s Pioneers and Austin Prep Cougars did battle at Stoneham Arena. Starting in net tonight for Austin Prep Senior Robbie Farrell (Wilmington, MA) and for Saint John’s Shrewsbury Dan Laursen (Shrewsbury, MA).

It was a low scoring contest tonight, Max Pineo (North Reading, MA) got the scoring started for Austin Prep on the power play. Pineo ripped it from the top of the circle and beat Saint John’s Goalie Laursen over the shoulder. At the end of 1, 1-0 AP.

The second period was a back and forth game until Saint John’s Junior Forward Sean Clark (Dudley, MA) picked up a pick in the slot area and put it in the back of the net beating Farrell to knot the game up at 1-1. After 2 periods of play, the teams went to the lovely confines of the Stoneham locker rooms tied at 1-1.

The third period was all Austin Prep but early on to no avail. Finally ,with about 5 minutes to play, Pineo got his second of the night to give AP the 2-1 lead late in the third. However,  Saint John’s did not get down or back down. They pulled the goalie with under a minute to play. In zone, a SJS defenseman man got the puck to the net for the Pioneers and Senior Forward Timothy Farley (Paxton, MA) jammed home a dirty, rebound goal to tie it at 2. That’s how it ended.

Final score 2-2

3 stars

1st  Max Pineo (AP)
2nd Dan Laursen (SJS)
3rd Jack Farrell (AP)

NZ’s Take: For Austin Prep Senior Max Pineo was very good tonight, one of the best players on the ice. Really has good wheels and can make plays at top speed. Fun to watch and has a positive impact on the game, would be a great pick up for a Prep School next fall. Senior goalie Robbie Farrell was steady between the pipes, loves to come out and play the puck and jump start the breakout. Eighth grade defenseman Jack Farrell saw big minutes on the AP blue line tonight. For St. John’s Shrewsbury; Forward Dhillon Wilde (Northborough, MA) continues to impress, he was making plays and creating offense every shift. Plays at good pace and has good hockey IQ. Laursen was great in the net tonight, made a few highlight reel saves that kept his team in it.
