Woburn Trips up Concord-Carlisle 4-1

Waltham, MA – In this consolation game of the Jake n Joes Tournament, Concord-Carlisle simply could not match Woburn’s speed and athleticism, losing by a final score of 4-1. Both teams played with decent pace despite playing for 3rd place. Woburn put some early pressure on Concord-Carlisle as they created some turnovers at the blue line and took off the other way. With 10:18 left Woburn struck first as senior Joe Juliano banged home a loose puck on a bit of a broken play. Assists went to junior Joey Guarino and senior Bobby Concannon. CC pushed back with the help of a power play as senior Charlie Cook, who also drew the initial penalty, had a few shots on goal including a backhander that just missed. Big Woburn senior goalie Nick D’Antuono kept CC off the scoreboard and the Tanners took the 1-0 lead into the second.

Woburn came out flying in the middle frame and got the puck deep. Sophomore Jonathan Surrette flew in, created a turnover, wheeled through a seam to the slot and fired one home for the unassisted tally to make it 2-0. Woburn carried most of the play during the period as their team speed is much better than CC’s. With 2:56 left another sophomore this time, Michael Santullo, scored an athletic goal with the assists going to Surrette and senior D Nick Moniz. CC, however, struck back on the power play with 49 secs left in the period when Cook, who had been CC’s best player all night, took a pass from freshman Dane Carter and buried it. Sophomore Connor Trant also figured in on the goal with a helper. The period ended with the Tanners up 3-1.

The third period was entirely controlled by the Tanners yet again. Adding to an already impressive night, the sophomore Surrette bolted down the right wing as a left shot on the power play with 6:50 left in the game and scored with a nice shot in-stride for his second tally of the night. That made the score 4-1 and the remainder of the period was largely academic.

NZ’s Take:

It should be noted right off the bat that we cannot be 100% sure that we have the player information correct on Concord-Carlisle because not only do they not have a roster posted to our website, but they also handed out rosters at the game with incorrect numbers and no positions listed. The only confirmation we have of the information listed here came from asking two players who were sitting in the stands.

With that out of the way, it was clear that Woburn was the better skating team. It was a complete game victory for the Tanners: the sophomore Surrette was strong all game long and senior goalie D’Antuono made big stops in the first period to build momentum and slow down Concord-Carlisle. Surrette was the best player in this game and our scouts agree that he is one of the best players in MA HS hockey. He can really fly and has great vision on the rush.

We were also impressed by Moniz: he showed good retrievals and good footwork, he is well-balanced on his feet. Santullo put forth a strong effort on the backcheck in addition to solid edgework despite being an underclassman. For CC, the senior Cook has good size, hits hard and was easily the Patriots’ best player. We also liked what sophomore Connor Trant was able to do in key situations carrying it effectively. Freshman Dane Carter was the top prospect on the team: he has good shiftiness, good hands and was able to set the table for his linemates on more than one occasion.

Three Stars:

  1. F Jonathan Surrette, Woburn
  2. D Nick Moniz, Woburn
  3. G Nick D’Antuono, Woburn
